2023 Toyota 4Runner at the beach

Is an off-roading adventure right up your alley? Do you need a vehicle that can keep up with your adventurous spirit and lifestyle? Then perhaps you should consider the 2023 Toyota 4Runner. For decades, the 4Runner has provided a reliable, durable, and comfortable way for drivers to explore the countryside, both on the road and off. This year marks the 40th anniversary of this stylish ride, and Toyota will release a special edition to mark the occasion. Here’s a closer look at the 2023 4Runnerand its amazing off-roading capabilities.

Engine

Before you take your wheels off the pavement, you’ll want to know you have a capable engine under the hood. You can count on the 4Runner, with its 4.0-liter V-6 engine, to provide. This powerful block delivers 270 horsepower and a peak torque of 278 lb-ft. Thanks to its dual independent variable valve timing with intelligence, torque is optimized to ensure ideal responsiveness, no matter where you’re driving. The Toyota 4Runner’s five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential shift mode lets you move through the gears manually when taking on tough climbs.

Every model is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds. The integrated tow hitch receiver and wiring harness make it easy to hook up a trailer and go. Hill start assist helps hold you in place on a steep incline while you shift from the brake to the gas, while downhill assist control prevents wheel lockup by helping you maintain a constant low speed. Opt for one of the TRD models to enjoy Toyota’s Crawl Control and an electronic locking rear differential. These models also have a multi-terrain monitor to provide a better view of the landscape.

Performance

Performance is everything when you take your vehicle off-roading, and you don’t want to get stuck in the hills without a ride. Luckily, the 4Runner has everything you need to go anywhere you want. For starters, it offers a four-link rear axle and coil link suspension, along with body-on-frame construction that makes it tough but also comfortable, even on rough and rocky terrain. It’s available in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations, so you can choose which option best suits your needs.

You’ll have 9 inches of ground clearance with two-wheel-drive models. These models also use automatic limited-slip differential to allow the wheels to spin a little, helping them get out of snow or sand easily. Upgrading to the part-time four-wheel-drive version increases the ground clearance to 9.6 inches. With four-wheel drive, you can take advantage of the active traction control, which distributes drive force to any wheel that’s touching the ground. A two-speed transfer case with a selectable low range can help with steep climbs and overcoming challenging terrain.

Exterior

Each trim level of the 4Runner has its own unique look and design. For the TRD Pro, the most off-road-capable 4Runner, you’ll get the TRD Pro badge, and you can choose from these exterior colors:

  • Solar Octane.
  • White.
  • Magnetic Gray Metallic.
  • Black.

Other features you can look forward to with this trim level are a 1/4-inch-thick aluminum front skid plate with red TRD lettering, a TRD roof rack, alloy flow-form wheels with Nitto Terra Grappler tires, and a cat-back exhaust. Although the TRD is the best model for off-roading, you’ll still get a capable SUV with the other trim levels. Some of the exterior styling features you can expect to see in other trims include:

  • Color-keyed accents on the grille.
  • A front spoiler.
  • A hood scoop.
  • Chrome-finished trim.

For the 40th Anniversary Special Edition trim, you’ll find several cool features that make this 4Runner stand out. It’s available in White, Barcelona Red Metallic, or Midnight Black Metallic.

In addition to these options, it also has 17-inch alloy wheels, a body-color grille, a bronze-colored 40th Anniversary exterior tailgate badge, and head-turning heritage graphics in red, yellow, and orange.

Interior

As you climb, crawl, and explore the off-road features in your area, you’re sure to enjoy being behind the wheel of the 2023 4Runner. Every trim is a little different, but each offers comfort and space for passengers and gear. For example, if you’re planning to bring along camping supplies, you’ll have 47.2 cubic feet of space with the back seat up. If you only have two people along for the adventure, fold the seats down to give yourself an enormous 89.7 cubic feet of room for your gear.

Take advantage of the pull-out cargo deck when loading your gear. It can support up to 440 pounds, making it easy to get ready and go. There’s a 120-volt outlet, so you can plug in whatever you need. For additional comfort, the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium trims feature SofTex-trimmed seats, heated front seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. In the Limited trim, you’ll enjoy leather-trimmed seats and a panoramic view monitor that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the area around your SUV.

Safety

Even when you’re off-roading, you want a vehicle that offers all the latest safety tech so you have a safe and fun ride everywhere you go. With the 2023 Toyota 4Runner, you’ll get the Toyota Safety Sense-P suite of driver assist features and technology standard across the lineup. This suite offers lane departure alert with sway warning, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, and high-speed dynamic radar cruise control. Also new for 2023, all 4Runners come standard with a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
