In 2021, Toyota’s debut of the GR86 sports car was greeted with universal approval. The sporty car’s reputation was boosted even further in 2022 when Toyota added more power to the GR86. While Toyota hasn’t reinvented the GR86 for 2023, it has added some standard and available upgrades that should, once again, propel this fun-to-drive car to the top of its class.
2023 Toyota GR86 Trim Levels and Pricing
The GR86 comes in two trim levels and one special edition. The base model GR86 starts at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $27,900 and comes nicely equipped with the Boxer engine and a six-speed manual transmission. You have 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Primacy tires and a dual chrome-tipped exhaust system. Inside, Sport fabric seats provide bolstered comfort with the dual-zone climate control system providing individual temperature control. A six-speaker audio system provides the soundtrack for your drive.
A GR86 Premium trim starts at an MSRP of $30,500 and builds off the base model with its 18-inch forged wheels with sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. For this trim, you find Ultrasuede and leather upholstery on the inside, along with heated seats.
Toyota’s GR86 Special Edition model boasts signature Solar Shift Orange exterior paint with black C-pillar graphics, 18-inch matte black wheels, and black cat-back dual exhaust tips. Toyota plans to build 860 units with a mid-$30,000 expected MSRP.
Toyota GR86 Performance
For the GR86, the GR stands for Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s global racing division. The performance of the GR86 starts with the powerful Boxer engine, a 2.4-liter flat-four-cylinder design with a standard six-speed manual transmission. This powertrain puts out 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, clocking a zero to 60 mph time of 6.1 seconds. With this pairing, you also get 20 mpg driving around town and 27 mpg on the freeway.
Toyota offers an automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and dynamic rev management technology as an option with a slightly improved economy. The automatic powertrain rates at 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. However, this version comes in a little slower, with a zero to 60 mph time of 6.6 seconds.
The engineers designed the cat-back exhaust system with high-grade corrosion-resistant materials featuring mandrel bends for smoother airflow. As a result, the GR86 engine performs better and provides a distinctive growl. In addition, the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system offers adjustability. You can keep it in Full-On mode and let the VSC do the work. Or, you can select Track Mode, which dials your steering and suspension in high-performance situations. The last option, Full-Off mode, allows you complete control.
Toyota installed functional air vents in the front fenders that channel airflow, enhancing control and performance. A track-tuned suspension system uses a Torsion limited-slip differential and a multi-link rear suspension system for impressive stability and acceleration. The rear-wheel-drive setup and perfect weight distribution deliver optimal in-and-out cornering speed. In addition, the GR86 engine sits lower in the high-strength steel and aluminum unibody construction, lowering its center of gravity for improved handling and stability.
Toyota GR86 Design
Every design detail shows off the GR86’s race-ready capability. A long aerodynamic hood and short rear deck give the GR86 a sleek profile. The 18-inch alloy wheels feature 10 spokes modeled after the Japanese sword, adding to its dominant style.
Slipping inside the cockpit, you find soft touch points and premium materials for a more refined look and feel. The marginal increase in price for the Premium trim adds the heated leather seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped brake lever.
Turbine-shaped air vents, aluminum race pedals, silver-finished toggle switches, and the driver-focused dash enhance the cockpit effect. In addition, you can switch views on the driver information screen to display normal, sport, and track driving data tailored to your situation. And, your rear seat folds down for more cargo space.
Toyota GR86 Technology
Remote keyless entry gets you inside with the key fob in your pocket, and push-button start technology gets your GR86 fired up. An 8-inch touch screen operates your infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology preloaded. A six-speaker audio system comes with the base model and an eight-speaker system in the Premium trim. Additionally, you can opt for a 10-inch, 200-watt subwoofer and crank up the bass.
Every model comes with a free trial of Toyota’s Connected Services. These services enable remote lock/unlock and engine start, plus Toyota Safety Connect and an Emergency Roadside Assistance button for enhanced benefit.
GR86 models equipped with the automatic transmission come with a suite of driver-assist systems designed to elevate your driving experience and keep you safer. The suite includes Pre-Collision Braking, which adds emergency brake support when activated. An Adaptive Cruise Control system enhances your cruise control by keeping you at a preset speed and distance, automatically changing speed in traffic.
The Lane Departure Warning with Sway Alert system tracks your GR86 when traveling within marked lanes. If the system detects an unintentional drift from your lane, it alerts you so you can take corrective action. In addition, this system alerts you when your GR86 starts to sway from its intended path. The Rear Parking Sonar with Reverse Automatic Braking system detects and alerts you to vehicles or other obstacles behind you when traveling in reverse. If you fail to react, the system’s brakes do it for you.
Available safety systems include Blind-Spot Detection, which alerts you to vehicles entering your blind zones to either side. These alerts will help you change lanes safely. Every model features an all-LED lighting system. You can upgrade to an Adaptive Front Lighting system that turns your headlights in the direction of your vehicle, enabling you to see better around corners.
