5 Reasons To Visit Virginia in Spring

Virginia is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful states to visit any time of the year, but it holds a unique charm in the spring. The spring sun makes everything glisten a little differently, and the minute changes in nature seem more important. Once the weather warms, flowers begin to bloom, the scent of freshly cut grass is in the air, and you can see the true beauty of Virginia shine through. If you love taking in the natural beauty of a place, Virginia has plenty of local attractions and activities to keep you busy. Read below as our team at Koons Tysons Toyota in Vienna, Virginia, shares our list of five reasons to visit Virginia in the springtime. Get Lost in Nature at Shenandoah National Park Shenandoah National Park is one of those places you need to see at least once in your lifetime. There's no better time to experience the awe-inspiring natural beauty here than during the spring. The mountain range towers above you anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 feet. Whether you're interested in hiking, learning about the natural fauna, seeing the native wildlife, or driving down Skyline Drive, there are many possibilities for your next trip to this national park. If you're an avid hiker, this location has some of the best hiking options. There are over 500 miles of trails to choose from, ranging in skill level from novice to advanced. Consider a simple day hike if you're new to hiking and brush up on safety tips for wildlife and hiking basics. If you prefer biking, you'll be happy to discover that mountain bikes, road bikes, and e-bikes are allowed along Skyline Drive and on any paved area in Shenandoah National Park. Several bike repair stations are located throughout the park, and commercial businesses offer guided tours. Location: 3655 U.S. Highway 211 E., Luray. Hours: Dawn to dusk. Contact: 540-999-3500. Spend a Day in Cape Charles Visit the town of Cape Charles for a quick, relaxing getaway. You'll find plenty to keep you occupied and help you disconnect from daily worries while enjoying the Virginia spring weather. Visit the downtown area for some retail therapy and shop the many charming stores carrying handmade pieces. Marvel at the carefully preserved character of the buildings and the town's natural charm. Settle in on the shore and visit the beach. Sunbathe in the warm spring air, try watersports, or build a sandcastle. After a day on the beach, take in the golden sunset as the daylight fades away. Location: 2 Plum St., Cape Charles. Hours: Vary depending on business and event. Contact: 757-331-3259. Tour the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is a great place to head to give your future marine biologist or current shark enthusiast a memorable learning experience. Some of the animals you can expect to see include the barracuda, green moray eel, sand tiger shark, zebra shark, Komodo dragon, eastern blue-tongued skink, North American river otter, and the harbor seal. Plan your visit early enough and register for one of the behind-the-scenes tours. Get an exclusive look at the sea turtle exhibit for $30 extra, where you can see three of the seven sea turtle species. Or interact with Komodo dragons, the largest lizard species, for only $55 more. Ticket prices begin at $29.95 for adult general admission, and there's a discount for senior citizens. To learn more, visit the website or call for information. Location: 717 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Contact: 757-385-3474. Visit the Impressive Waterfalls If you love water and marvel at the sound and immense power of crashing cataracts, head to any of these three waterfalls in the Shenandoah National Park in the spring. The South River Falls is nestled among the trees and has an inviting picnic area nearby. The trail leading up to the falls is short and features a nice observation point. It's a great option if you want to enjoy a day out with the kids or are new to hiking. Whiteoak Canyon Falls is a challenging trail and best for those with at least moderate to advanced hiking abilities. You'll encounter massive boulders, steep cliffs, and six gorgeous waterfalls with heights ranging from 35 to 86 feet. Dark Hollow Falls features a rather forgiving hiking trail that's only slightly over an hour long. After an elevation gain of 440 feet, you'll view a 70-foot waterfall that's both calming and intimidating to see in person. Location: 3655 U.S. Highway 211 E., Luray. Hours: Dawn to dusk. Contact: 540-999-3500. See the Van Gogh Bridge Head to Reston, Virginia, and visit the Van Gogh Bridge. The bridge itself is a piece of art but also functions to join the businesses and residential area of Lake Anne's Washington Plaza. Because there are trees on both sides of the bridge, early spring is the best time to visit when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Whether you're a novice photographer using your camera phone to snap a few photos or have the skills of a seasoned photographer behind the lens, your images will be breathtaking. Get the angles right, and you'll also get a beautiful reflection in the water. Location: 11404 Washington Plaza W., Reston. Hours: Sunset is the best time. Contact: 703-790-0643. National Gallery of Art Location: 4th St and Constitution Ave, Washington D.C. Phone: 202-737-4215 The first spot on our list is the National Gallery of Art, which is one of the most well-known museums in the region. It has a permanent collection consisting of over 150,000 pieces by renowned American and European artists. The complex is split into two buildings, with NW 4th St. in between and an underground walkway connecting them. Some of the museum's most notable pieces include various presidential portraits, including that of George Washington, along with works from renowned artists like Da Vinci, Monet, and Rothko. The National Gallery of Art, despite having such a large and prestigious collection, is completely free to the public, making this one of the best values in all of the DMV. They're open every day of the year, except for certain holidays, and offer a variety of guided tours, which are also free. International Spy Museum Location: 700 L'Enfant Plaza SW, Washington D.C. Phone: 202-393-7798 The next spot on our list is one that people of all ages can enjoy, thanks to its interactive exhibits and unique theme. The International Spy Museum is one of the hottest-ticket attractions in all of Washington D.C., with a massive collection of nearly 1,000 artifacts related to spies and espionage throughout history. The building consists of two floors where children and adults alike can go on an undercover mission, completing various tasks to test if you've got what it takes to be a spy. Ticket prices range based on demand, but the typical cost for an adult ticket usually lands somewhere at or below $30 while children's tickets go for about $15 to $20. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with shorter hours Saturday through Monday. National Archives Museum Location: 701 Constitution Ave NW, Washington D.C. Phone: 202-357-5000 The National Archives Museum is another iconic D.C. institution, most famous for housing some of the most important documents in United States history. It's located just across the street from the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, which is another must-see D.C. attraction. The National Archives is the only place where you can see all three components of The Charters of Freedom, those being the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and The Constitution. In addition to these main attractions, the museum also has rotating exhibits throughout the year. If you're planning a visit to the National Archives, we recommend bringing along a jacket or sweater. This is because the temperature inside the room where they display The Charters of Freedom is especially cold to preserve the documents. This museum is free to the public, although busy seasons may require reserving your spot on the museum's website in advance. United States Botanic Garden Location: 100 Maryland Ave SW, Washington D.C. Phone: 202-225-8333 If you're looking to take a break from the historical and cultural museums, consider a trip to the United States Botanic Garden. The building consists of a massive greenhouse filled with various species of plants, including ones from the desert, tropical, and subtropical climates. One of the museum's main attractions is the blooming of the endangered corpse flower, which only occurs every seven to nine years. The facility also includes two outdoor gardens along with rotating exhibits to inform the public about proper plant care and preservation. Like other museums on this list, the United States Botanic Garden is completely free to visit. White House Visitor Center Location: 1450 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington D.C. George Washington’s Mount Vernon

6 Essential Alexandria Experiences for History Buffs

George Washington’s hometown of Alexandria, Virginia, is rich in history, including 140 locations with ties to our nation’s first president. Many sites and exhibits throughout the city make it a history buff’s dream come true. The team at Koons Tysons Toyota invites you to explore six essential Alexandria experiences for history buffs. George Washington’s Mount Vernon George Washington’s Mount Vernon is his former estate, which was once the central hub in Alexandria for productivity and commerce. It’s now a museum that displays memorabilia and documents that once belonged to some key figures in American history. Visitors can stroll the carefully preserved grounds and view the sites of George Washington’s gardens, farm, and final resting place. Touring George Washington’s Mount Vernon gives visitors a unique perspective of Alexandria and our first president’s part in shaping America. George Washington’s Mount Vernon is located at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in Mount Vernon. Freedom House Museum Freedom House Museum explores the experiences of enslaved and freed Blacks who lived in the area and were trafficked through Alexandria. The museum site was once a complex that trafficked Black men and women and is now home to three new exhibitions delving into Alexandria’s Black history and the American Black experience. The museum also features stories from the Civil Rights Movement. The museum’s purpose is to help people learn from a tragic time in history so that they may reflect and work toward change in current times. You can visit the Freedom House Museum at 1315 Duke St. Torpedo Factory Art Center Torpedo Factory is a former World War II munitions factory transformed into 82 artist studios and six galleries. It’s also home to the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. The exhibit Preserving Alexandria’s Maritime History explores the recent excavation of four ships found along the city’s waterfront. You can view a 3D model of one of the ships. The exhibit A Community Digs Its Past: The Lee Street Site is devoted to excavating one city block, focusing on 18th-century wharves and 19th-century residences, taverns, warehouses, shops, and a support complex used during the Civil War as a Union hospital. They also have a variety of changing exhibits that showcase other discoveries. These exhibits may contain finds from their most recent excavations, as well as artifacts from Civil War sites, an 18th-century tavern, or prehistoric sites. Archaeologists and volunteers are available in a public laboratory during the week, and visitors can stop by and ask questions for more in-depth exploration. You can find the Torpedo Factory Art Center at 105 N. Union St. Alexandria Colonial Tours Period-costumed guides help you step back in time through various tours at Alexandria Colonial Tours. One tour explores Alexandria’s history, leading you past brick-lined streets, cobblestone alleyways, and elegant federal homes, following in the footsteps of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. This tour will inform you of the many historical firsts in Alexandria, such as in 1774, when Virginia elected George Washington as a delegate to the First Continental Congress. Each 60-minute walking tour covers eight to 10 blocks and is led by an entertaining, experienced, and knowledgeable guide. Another tour explores Alexandria’s African American history. Alexandria has the dubious distinction of being the former home to one of the largest slave markets in America. Notably, it later became home to one of the South’s largest freedmen communities before the Civil War. This tour looks at African American history from slavery to freedom, spanning the years 1749 to 1865. If you like your history on the spooky side, there’s also a Ghost and Graveyard tour. This one-hour walking tour covers around six blocks and is led by lantern light. Your colonial-costumed guide will lead you through the enchanting streets of Old Town, Alexandria’s historic district. During the tour, you’ll be privy to old ghost stories, unsolved mysteries, folklore, legends, tales of romance, and spine-tingling yarns about angry ghosts looking for revenge. Tours meet at 221 King St. at the corner of King and Fairfax. Alexandria Black History Museum Alexandria Black History Museum encompasses the museum, the Alexandria African American Heritage Park, and the Watson Reading Room. The museum’s mission is to provide enrichment and education for Alexandria’s visitors and residents and to foster understanding and tolerance between cultures. The Alexandria African American Heritage Park is open from dawn to dusk for visitors. The Watson Reading Room has over 3,000 documents on African American history. Another goal of the museum is to further appreciate and understand African Americans’ diverse experiences in Alexandria and the United States. You’ll find the Alexandria Black History Museum at 902 Wythe St. Carlyle House Historic Park Carlyle House Historic Park is the site of an 18th-century mansion, museum, and gardens. This house belonged to John Carlyle, a founder of Alexandria and a wealthy merchant. This regal stone mansion was completed in 1753. It’s one of the nation’s best and most elegant examples of Georgian residential architecture. Visitors can tour the home and the gardens at 121 N. Fairfax St. National Inventors Hall of Fame The National Inventors Hall of Fame celebrates the history of modern innovation with interactive exhibits housed at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It features a gallery of icons documenting each of the 500-plus inductees, exploring their contributions to technology that influenced the course of history for America and the world. Exploring the archives and kiosks devoted to an inventor’s achievements may inspire the next generation of inventors. They have a museum store with merchandise, gifts, books, and apparel at 600 Dulany St. Alexandria’s rich and fascinating past makes it a perfect place to delve into our nation’s history. When you’re ready to tour the six essential Alexandria experiences for history buffs like yourself, you might want a new vehicle to take you there. Virginia Day Trip

Plan a Day Trip to Virginia

Have you been thinking about a fun day trip to Virginia? The southeastern state spans from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains. As one of the 13 original colonies, it’s filled with historic landmarks and living history museums. Virginia also boasts incredible landscapes and outdoor activities along the Atlantic coast. Here's a list of five ideas to help you plan a day trip in the Virginia area. Luray Caverns A popular tourist attraction in Virginia is the Luray Caverns in the Shenandoah Valley. Discovered in 1878, it's the largest cave system in the eastern United States. Do you want to walk down into the depths of an underground cavern? The paved walkways are lit for your safe enjoyment. You don't want to miss the fabulous rock formations. Guided tours take you through natural wonders in cathedral-sized rooms with 10-story ceilings. These caverns earn their moniker as Geology's Hall of Fame. Experience the awesomeness of bright stalactites and crystal-clear pools of water. Make a plan to get your tickets in advance or schedule some flex time due to availability. Children under 6 are eligible for free admission. The temperature in the caverns is a consistent 54 degrees with very high humidity, which makes it feel like 65 degrees. Some visitors prefer to wear a light jacket while touring the caverns, and remember to wear comfortable walking shoes. Other attractions, such as the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Toy Town Junction, and the Shenandoah Heritage Village, are included with the daily admission. Location: 101 Cave Hill Road, Luray. The Poe Museum About two and a half hours away from the caverns is The Poe Museum. The renowned writer Edgar Allan Poe once resided in Richmond, Virginia, and the museum is a testament to his life and works. As expected, many other museums dedicated to Poe exist. The Richmond site, however, has the most extensive collection of his artifacts worldwide. It’s in the Old Stone House, the longest-standing residential building in Richmond. Poe's clothing, personal letters, and childhood bed are on display. You can also see The Cornwell Daguerreotype, a famous image of Poe taken four days after a suicide attempt. On the grounds, you’ll find the Enchanted Garden, inspired by Poe's poem, “To One in Paradise.” It features a fountain, shrine, and several landscape pieces reflective of Poe's writing. Look for the rock inscribed with a character's name from "A Tale of The Ragged Mountains" and a brick wall like the one in "William Wilson." The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed for some holidays. Location: 1914 E. Main St., Richmond. Busch Gardens Drive approximately an hour east of the museum to visit Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. This family-friendly amusement park is ideal for thrill seekers. Unlike other Busch Gardens parks in the United States, this locale has a European theme. Walking from attraction to attraction, you'll get a sense of being among cozy European villages. In addition to roller coasters and leisure rides, the park has animal exhibits and live entertainment shows. Beer bottling company, Anheuser-Busch, owns the park, so alcoholic beverages are available for adults all day. Check the park's website for hours of operation and admission discounts. If you're taking your day trip during the summer, the facility also houses Water Country USA, an outdoor water park equipped with slides and pools. Location: 1 Busch Gardens Blvd., Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center The Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center is about 15 minutes from Busch Gardens. It's the world's largest living history museum. With over 300 acres featuring iconic sites, you can learn about America's earliest times. You’ll explore original buildings and recreations of the 17th and 18th centuries. Get a kick out of actors dressed in traditional clothing demonstrating blacksmithing, weaving, brickmaking, and other bygone trades. Visit the two art museums, enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride, eat at one of the historic taverns, and shop for handcrafted pieces. Kids of all ages will revel in learning about colonial times in such an interactive way. They can even download the Colonial Williamsburg Explorer app to discover more amenities. The Governor's Palace is one of the must-see buildings in Colonial Williamsburg, built in the early 1700s. A fire destroyed the main building in 1781, but it was rebuilt in the 1930s. The palace was the home of the Royal Governors of the Colony of Virginia. They included Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry. Take a tour of the lavish establishment that held many extravagant parties. Historic furnishings, weapons, and cooking demonstrations await your eager attention. The center is open daily for visitors. We recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes due to the expansive size. Location: 101 Visitor Center Drive, Williamsburg. Virginia Beach Boardwalk Transport yourself back to the present by driving an hour southeast to Virginia Beach. This is where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. At the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, you're right in the center of lots of eclectic activity. The boardwalk itself is 3 miles long and 28 feet wide. You won't be able to get enough of the surrounding savory restaurants, family-friendly attractions, and amazing views of the Atlantic. Surfing, cycling, rollerblading, sunbathing, and more are all on the menu. JT's Grommet Island Park is a 15,000-square-foot beach playground with wheelchair-accessible entrances. It has raised sandcastle building tables at an accessible height, a sensory board for autistic and visually impaired children, and a swaying boat. Everyone is welcome there. The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum and Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum are two more boardwalk spots that appeal to history buffs. Many of the side streets that lead to Atlantic Avenue showcase nautical sculptures. However, the ultimate sculpture is King Neptune. Be sure to get a selfie with the famous 24-foot, 12-ton bronze statue at the entrance to Neptune Festival Park on 31st Street. Maximize your day trip time by staying at one of the dozens of hotels that line the boardwalk. Location: 2100 Parks Ave., Virginia Beach. As the weather begins to turn and our minds begin to fill with thoughts of the upcoming holiday season, it's time for families to find things to do. If you’re interested in taking in the beauty of Arlington, there are several events and activities for everyone to enjoy. The following locations, filled with sights of snow mixed with holiday decorations, are sure to bring a smile to everyone's face. Ice Skating Bring your friends and family to the rink at Pentagon Row, whether you are lacing up your skates for the first time or following an annual tradition. You can take the metro to Pentagon City, but ensure you cover your blades for the ride. You’ll find this rink at 1201 S. Joyce St. in Arlington. Make sure you bundle up to spend time on this outdoor rink. Decorated with festive holiday decor, the rink’s ready to host skaters of all ages and abilities. You can even rent skates before enjoying the rink seven days a week. As you rest between sessions on the ice, gather around the large stone fireplace to warm up and loosen tired muscles. Once rested, spend some more time on northern Virginia's largest outdoor skating rink. Tree Lighting Ceremonies Now, days after Thanksgiving, it's time to start lighting Christmas trees in the area. On Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., the Village at Shirlington shopping complex invites the public to a free celebration. This event will include cartridge rides, selfies with Santa, music, and entertainment. There will also be a chance to find unique Christmas presents at a Maker's Market. A week later, on Dec. 8, the lights turn on in Roslyn with a free celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. This event will include music and various prize opportunities. There will also be beer, wine, and spirit sales for the adults attending the festivities. If you can’t make the event in person, it will be live-streamed on the internet. The following few days will give you time to enjoy the celebration at the Central Place Plaza located at 1800 N. Lynn St. Make Your New Wreath Slow down and enjoy holiday music while gathering with friends and family to make brand-new Christmas decorations. On Saturday, Dec. 10, there’s a wreath-making workshop scheduled at the Long Branch Nature Center. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A $40 registration fee lets the participants enjoy the festivities while getting basic instructions on creating some festive laurel. You’ll have all your materials provided, enough to allow each person to bring home two wreaths at the end of the day. Feel free to bring personal decorations for the wreaths and a pair of wire cutters. Family Memories with Santa The big man from the North Pole makes several stops in and around the Arlington area throughout December. If you want to shop before or after meeting Santa, head to the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. Santa is making his southern home there from Nov. 28 to Dec. 11. If you have a family member with special needs, Santa is looking forward to meeting them. He’s set aside a special day to show his even softer side on Sunday, Dec. 4. Sunday, Dec. 11, is the time to bring your furry family to meet Santa Paws for pet photos. Bring your smiles and unique outfits, as this will be an excellent time to take the ultimate Christmas card picture. You can make a reservation so all your family members are comfortable meeting him in a quieter, calmer area than the regular meet and greet. Bring Your Singing Voices Gather your friends and family in Arlington on Saturday, Dec. 10, to enjoy a sing-along with the National Chamber Ensemble. The concert is at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 4444 Arlington Blvd. and starts at 7:30 p.m. The performance space's acoustics means you will hear every note from anywhere in the building. While you’ll need tickets for the event, you’ll also be going home with a recorded copy of the night to enjoy for years to come at home. Just across the river in Washington, DC, the DAR Constitution Hall is hosting the US Navy Band's annual Christmas concert at 1776 D St. NW. Remember that you’ll need tickets for this event, but you can buy them online before the show. There’ll be three shows scheduled for everyone to enjoy. On Saturday, Dec. 17, the shows are at 3 and 8 p.m. Not to worry if Saturday’s busy; there’s a final performance scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday. These memorable shows were created for families to enjoy with special guests such as Santa. Concertgoers may also want to watch the sky for the special flyover scheduled during the weekend. Wreaths Across America One of the most somber holiday events in Arlington occurs each year at Arlington National Cemetery. On Saturday, Dec. 17, soldiers, scouts, and family members will gather to adorn the cemetery. Community Volunteers are also welcome to help lay wreaths. The event is free but does require registration through the Wreaths Across America Website. It begins between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. If you plan to participate in the event, you can drive and park at the cemetery. If you hold a DOD military ID card, you can park on Joint Base Myers, but limited parking will be available. To avoid parking headaches, you should consider getting there by metro; there are three stops in the area. You can use the Arlington National Cemetery stop but prepare for the crowds if you do. To avoid the bottleneck, you can get off at either the Pentagon or Roslyn stops and walk across Memorial Bridge. Check your gate registration for the best metro option. Once you arrive, remember that you’ll need to enter the grounds through the gate you registered from. Whether you are honoring those who fell in defense of our nation or singing along with classic songs, the Arlington area has something for everyone during the holiday season. Our team at Koons Tysons Toyota has gladly highlighted these events for you, and we genuinely wish you and yours a magical holiday season.
